WAITING UPON THE LORD

Waiting upon the Lord is the active, expectant posture of faith in God's sovereignty and timing, not passive resignation. It involves trusting in His promises, maintaining hope in seasons of delay, and recognizing that His methods often defy human logic. This is achieved through persistent prayer, patient endurance, and spiritual alertness to God's unexpected means of fulfillment.

Trusting in divine proclamation

Believing God's word even when circumstances contradict His promise.
✔ Receive God's promises through His word and His servants with faith, not skepticism
✔ Stand on specific scriptural promises in prayer, as Elisha stood on the word given to him
✔ Declare God's faithfulness in the face of impossible situations
✔ Reject the cynicism of the officer who saw with physical eyes but lacked spiritual sight
✔ Remember that God's word is true regardless of visible evidence

Recognizing God's unexpected means

Understanding that God often fulfills His promises through unlikely messengers.
✔ Look for God's provision in unexpected places and through unlikely people
✔ Do not dismiss humble or unlikely sources of breakthrough
✔ Understand that God can use the marginalized, the outcast, or the enemy to accomplish His will
✔ Be spiritually alert to recognize God's movement even when it comes in an unfamiliar form
✔ Give thanks to God, not the vessel, when breakthrough arrives

Maintaining hope in desperate times

Choosing faith over despair when situations appear hopeless.
✔ Pray without ceasing, especially when the situation seems deadlocked
✔ Reject the temptation to surrender to despair or bitterness
✔ Encourage yourself with testimonies of God's past faithfulness
✔ Surround yourself with others who will strengthen your faith, not feed your fear
✔ Fix your eyes on God's character, not your current crisis

Exercising patient endurance

Waiting with expectancy, not passive resignation.
✔ Continue in daily obedience and worship while awaiting breakthrough
✔ Prepare practically and spiritually for the fulfillment of God's promise
✔ Resist the urge to force a solution or manipulate the timing
✔ Use the waiting season to deepen your dependence on God
✔ Remember that God's timing is perfect, even when it feels delayed

Guarding against unbelief

Rejecting cynical doubt that forfeits participation in God's blessing.
✔ Identify and repent of areas of hidden unbelief or cynical "realism"
✔ Speak words of faith that align with God's promises, not your fears
✔ Distance yourself from voices that mock God's promises or timeline
✔ Learn from the officer's fatal error—his unbelief excluded him from the blessing
✔ Ask God to renew your wonder and expectancy in His power

Acting on revealed opportunity

Moving with obedience when God opens the door.
✔ Be ready to move quickly when God's providence creates an opening
✔ Step out in faith when God's direction becomes clear, as the lepers did
✔ Share the good news of God's provision with others who are still in need
✔ Do not hoard God's blessings—they are given to be shared and testified of
✔ Move from waiting to action when God says "now"

Embracing God's higher purpose

Understanding that all things work for His glory and our ultimate good.
✔ Trust that God's delays are not denials, but part of a larger redemptive plan
✔ Believe that both the waiting and the breakthrough will bring glory to God
✔ Look for how God is shaping your character through the process
✔ Remember that God's reputation is at stake in His promises to you
✔ Rest in the truth that His word never returns void

"They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." – Isaiah 40:31
